Let’s try an exercise in happiness and gratitude for one week. At the end of every day, reflect on three things that made you happy during the day.
They can be anything, like hearing from an old friend, the smell of coffee, having a meal with your family, or an act of kindness that someone showed you.
Answer the following every day:
1. Today’s first happy moment was…
2. The second time I felt happy was when…
3.. What was the last happiness surprise of your day?
Science proves this daily reflection works. In one study, the authors had a group of people list three good things that happened to them everyday for one week. Even though the experiment only lasted for a week, participants reported feeling happier and less sad at the one, three, and six month follow up periods. This practice trains our brains to think positively!
