The prefrontal cortex in the frontal lobe of your brain has an experience simulator, that allows us to imagine how experiences will go before they happen.
Along with this simulator comes an impact bias; a tendency to overestimate the impact that future events will have on us. Studies have shown that 3 months following a traumatic experience, your happiness is unaffected by it ever happening. This is possible because of our “psychological immune systems” that can synthesize happiness. We change our views of the world so that we can feel better about our circumstances.
Our brains are amazing things, and Dan Gilbert’s TED Talk: The Surprising Science of Happiness teaches you to use this synthetic happiness to your advantage.
